The cement foundations are out here somewhere, but they are difficult to locate. According to Harrison Scott, a repair yard and sand tower dispenser was also on this knoll - in addition to the Richfield gasoline station, lunch counter, and lodging. One may reasonably infer the early day Caltrans (referred to as the "Highway Department") was the proprietor of these highway maintenance works, since the state of California was the issuer of the bonds which financed the original Ridge Route construction. The sand was used to coat the Ridge Route in icy road conditions. The shadow to the far right in the photo is of the one remaining tree on the knoll. Photo from private collection of avnative.
