Description

On April 18th of 2015, my hometown of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ermelo" rel="nofollow">Ermelo</a> (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands" rel="nofollow">The Netherlands</a>), celebrated its 70th anniversary year of the liberation from occupation by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_Germany" rel="nofollow">Nazi Germany</a> during the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II" rel="nofollow">Second World War</a>. On this exact day, seventy years ago, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Canadian_Army" rel="nofollow">Canadian soldiers</a> came into town via the Putterweg, hit a roadblock and met with some German resistance. Today, festivities included a re-enactment of the fighting and liberation, in which cadets of the Royal Military School (the <a href="http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koninklijke_Militaire_School_(Nederland)" rel="nofollow">KMS</a> in Ermelo) were dressed in period-accurate Canadian uniforms and ran through the Putterweg, guns blazing.

There was lots of music, a static show of military vehicles and demonstrations of armaments and equipment by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Netherlands_Army" rel="nofollow">our own armed forces</a>; the 400th Medical Battalion (<a href="http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/400_Geneeskundig_Bataljon" rel="nofollow">400 GNKBAT</a>), 45th Mechanized Infantry Battalion (<a href="http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regiment_Infanterie_Oranje_Gelderland" rel="nofollow">45 PAINFBAT RIOG</a>), Communications (<a href="http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regiment_Verbindingstroepen" rel="nofollow">Regiment Verbindingstroepen</a>) and one of the Engineering Battalions (<a href="http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genie_(strijdmachtonderdeel)" rel="nofollow">Genie</a>).
