Summary

Description

Rhizocretions in paleosol in the Permian of Kansas, USA.

Rhizocretions are terrestrial fossils consisting of irregularly curvilinear, often downward-branching structures having a subcircular cross-section. They represent the position of roots of ancient plants. Rhizocretions are also known as rhizoliths or rhizo-ichnomorphs or vegemorphs, or simply “root traces”. The root word “rhizo-” literally means “roots”.
