Certain it is, that these more re-cent lava-flows are affording clews for the read-ing of those famous ancient beds between themountains of Donegal and the Outer Hebrides,where the original surface has been buried 3,000feet under volcanic ejections. For an idea ofthe appalling roughness of some of these lavaplains, imagine a furiously lashed sea, frozen atthe instant old Neptunes orgies were at theirwildest. It was among such practically impene-trable fastnesses that the Nez Perce Indians, ina recent war, so long defied our military.
