Immediately upon his acceptance of the presi-dency, he arranged for the care of his privateaffairs by his brother and sons ; and from thattime on he has devoted his extraordinary powersof body and mind to the promotion and man-agement of the exposition. In the beginning,his friends looked with concern on his prodigiousexpenditure of energy, and feared that he mightnot live through the three years.
