English: The undercover operation began last year in May. Specialists of the Army drove up with civilian vehicles. They removed explosives from total 11 shafts along the road and the railway line between

St. Margrethen and Au. The explosives were in capsules in a kind of pipe bombs buried in the ground since WW II/Cold War. They should impede Hitler's tanks. The road and the railway line would been destroyed. Now the shafts are dismantled because they impede the redevelopment of the street. The workers were instructed, nothing to say about the purpose of the works. A journalist from the local newspaper has revealed the operation now. St. Gall Rhine Valley, Switzerland, April 25, 2012.

Another relic of WW II in this area unfortunately no longer exists. At the railway bridge to Austria a derailing switch was installed. This would have derailed railroad armored trains of the German Wehrmacht. The derailed train could then been shelled from the fortress Heldsberg above. This 'wrong' switch was tested till up in the fifties of the 20th Century from time to time. It was operated with cables by hand grips from a concrete shaft with lockable metal lid. As in 1976 new railroad ties were installed, also the derailing switch was removed. The control with the cables was removed only last year as the construction of the new bridge was begun. Whether the pillars of the new bridge will be loaded again with explosives?
