mancaptives were sacrificed by the victors to their native gods.Two years later (356 B.C.) the Tarquinians, who were nowjoined by the Faliscans, inflicted a second defeat on a con-sular army, and the event of the battle was determined bythe frightful appearance of their priests, who led the attacklike furies, with writhing serpents in their hair and blazingtorches brandished in their hands.^ The Romans, we areassured, recovered from their panic and turned their defeatinto a victory ; but this is hardly consistent with the narrativewhich follows. For the Etruscans were so elated by the issueof the battle that the whole nation rose in arms, and, led bythe victorious Tarquinians, penetrated as far as the salt-works on the left bank of the Tiber. So grave was the out-look that Caius Marcius Rutilus was named dictator—the firstplebeian ever appointed to that great office. By his vigorous * lyivy, vii. 67 ; cf. iv. 33.
