During the spring of 1898 the superintendent of the Cape VincentStation investigated the sturgeon fisheries of Lakes Erie and Ontariowith the view to taking up the propagation of this species, but nolocality was found where spawning fish could be obtained in sufficientnumbers to warrant the establishment of an auxiliary station for thispurpose. CAR AND MESSENGER SERVICE. Owing to the necessity for rebuilding cars Nos. 1 and 2 and thelarge amount of routine work necessitated by the increased output offish during the fiscal year, this service has been taxed to its utmostcapacity, and it was found necessary to hire baggage and express carsfrom the railroads on several occasions to assist in making the distri-bution in Virginia and Michigan. XXXV cars was used during the first four mbutlis of the fiscal year in makingcollections of marine and fresh-water fishes and transporting the sameto the Tennessee Centennial Exposition at Nashville, Tenn., and againduring the months of May and June, 1898, in transferring salt-waterspecimens from Woods Hole, Mass., to Omaha, and fresh-water fishesfrom Quincy, 111., and other points in the Mississippi Valley. Car No. 3 also made two trips from Woods Hole to San Franciscowith lobsters, tautogs, and blue crabs, the first in July and the last inDecember. On tfie return trip of the car in July 350 giant crabs werebrought from the Pacific Coast and planted in Pagan Creek, a tributaryof the Chesapeake Bay. The car left San Francisco July 31 with 1,100crabs, 600 females and 500 males; 450 were packed in seaweed in therefrigerator compartment under the car, 550 were placed in transporta-tion tanks, in salt water with air circulation, and 100 in cra
