Summary
[edit]DescriptionRenaissance Center, Jefferson Avenue, Detroit, MI - 53017585479.jpg |
English: Built in 1973-1977, this Modern complex of buildings was designed by John Portman and Associates to house a hotel and offices in a modern high-rise complex on the Detroit Riverfront. The complex features four octagonal 39-story towers with cylindrical circulation towers surrounding a cylindrical 73-story tower that rises to 750 feet (230 meters), making it the tallest building in Detroit, surpassing the Greater Penobscot Building, and two 21-story towers to the east along the Detroit River, built in 1981. The building features glass curtain wall exteriors, cylindrical and hexagonal towers, and LED lights at the top of the towers, with a podium at the base that creates a large enclosed superblock. Inside, the building features retail space, offices, a hotel, lobbies, large exhibition spaces, and once housed a multiplex movie theater. The building was purchased by General Motors in 1996, who undertook a renovation, completed in 2005, that added a winter garden and refreshed much of the office space within the complex, which was carried out under the direction of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), Ghafari Associates, Gensler, and SmithGroup. The building today houses multiple office tenants, a hotel, and many retail tenants at the winter garden, as well as a showroom for General Motors. |
