Summary
[edit]DescriptionRemains of a Roman road - geograph.org.uk - 1420879.jpg |
English: Remains of a Roman road. Running from the bottom left corner of the image, towards a point just above and to the right of the centre, are the faint remains of an old road, which was discovered during a Roman road survey.
Many other sections of this road are still identifiable; for more on this, and for further details at Canmore, see http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/84460/details/gallangad+burn/ (see also the other articles that are linked from there). The stretch of road shown here may therefore be part of a much more extensive ancient route, whose course is described in various articles in DES ("Discovery and Excavation in Scotland"). See DES (1974), under the heading "The Clyde Crossing", on pages 34-5 and 57-8, and a much shorter article in DES (1980), on page 35, under the heading "Roman Road Survey". This photo shows the road on its south-western approach to the Gallangad Burn; the valley of that burn runs from left to right across the image. Note the green gap in the heather coverage at the point where the road reaches the upper edge of the valley. In the valley itself, the descent of the road and its ascent on the other side of the burn were indicated by long straight patches of bracken which exactly outline its course; the bracken has grown preferentially on the former road surface. Given that the burn is easy to cross at almost any point upstream of the falls, I was surprised to find that the crossing of the Gallangad Burn was so close (only 20 metres or so) to the perilous drop at the top of the waterfall Ishneich; see https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1132282 The following annotated satellite view shows the course of the road in this area: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&ll=56.002815,-4.477068&spn=0.005267,0.013057&t=h&z=17&msid=111659464483026017583.0004716b9645d49251470 (of the nine blue markers on that map, the dotted one at the lower left indicates the point from which the present photo was taken; the other markers show the course of the road on the other side of the Gallangad Burn, as described at 1420880). |
