| Description |
English: Remains of Redgate Hard A double line of wooden posts mark the route of an old hard, leading out as far as the low water mark of the River Orwell. It is possible to walk along the gravel bed of the hard, which is covered by a thin layer of silt. Either side of the hard, the silt is too deep and treacherous to walk on.
Though not substantiated anywhere, it is believed that Redgate Hard, together with a similar area of hard-standing on the opposite side of the river were, in Roman times, a ford across a much shallower and undredged river. |
