English: Registry Office, 71 Northgate Originally known as Egremont House, this grade II listed Georgian manor was built around 1811 for farmer John Egremont and his wife Hannah Crowther, heiress to Thomas Crowther, a wealthy wool stapler and owner of a warehouse, and the Woolpacks Inn on Westgate. After several changes of hands, the house came into public ownership in 1869 and was acquired by the Rivers Board. It became council owned in 1951. |
