Description

This image is from a small sequence of United Nations photographs, possibly relating to the United Nations Appeal for Children. Caption information identifies the photograph as being taken in Vienna, May, 1946. The hand-edited photo “shows Austrian refugees from the Austrian border countries. They live under miserable conditions in barracks in a poor district of Vienna…. There are 21 people living in one room and sleeping in bunks. There is no fresh air as cooking goes on a primitive stove heated winter and summer.”
