Summary

[edit]
Description
English: 24 March 2013, in Kemble Road, Tottenham. A man with what looked like a child's pushchair was poking in the pile of dumped rubbish. He didn't seem to find anything he wanted and walked away a few seconds later.

He suggested that "some take the jobs we won't do". Adding: "... a good few will have subterranean wheezes going on. The rest of us won't even know it". Hugh Muir points out that many "wheezes" which migrants use to survive can be creative; and involve self-help and mutual aid among members of new communities.

One practice people do know about is urban waste scavenging. From time to time, Harringay Online one of our local community websites has a new discussion thread where members voice an old topic: their discomfort and irritation when other people hunt though waste bins in front gardens for items of value.
