English: This is a scene from the poem Den lille Hornblæser (The little Bugler) by Hans Peter Holst - written in 1849 - and describing the deeds of a young bugler in 1848. It is based on anecdotes, not on historical facts. Christiansen also made a slighly larger version of this scene - with a more detailed background and sky - which was auctioned at Bruun Rasmussen in 2006. See "Other versions".
Dansk: Maleriet illustrerer en episode i det episke digt Den lille Hornblæser, skrevet af Hans Peter Holst i 1849. Det lange digt beskriver hornblæserens bedrifter i 1848 og har mere anekdotisk end historisk værdi.
