Description
English: Memorial to Raoul Wallenberg (1912-1947?), Swedish diplomat who worked in Budapest, during World War II to rescue Jews from the Holocaust. The inauguration of the original monument carved by Mr. Pál Pátzay was scheduled April 9, 1949 by the Wallenberg Committee but the communist regime removed it during the previous night. The pedestal was destroyed, the sculpture was erected later in Debrecen (Hungary) but its origin was kept secret. Finally it was restored to the 50th anniversary of its demolition.
Magyar: Raoul Wallenberg (1912-1947?) svéd diplomata emlékműve, aki a második világháború idején magyar zsidók ezreit mentette meg a deportálástól. Pátzay Pál szobrát 1949 április 9-én tervezte felavatni a Wallenberg Bizottság, de a kommunista rezsim az avatás előtti éjszakán lebontatta. Talpazata megsemmisült, a szobrot később Debrecenben felállították, de eredetét eltitkolták. Az új emlékmű felállítására az eredeti lebontásának 50. évfordulóján került sor. (Budapest, XIII. ker. Szent István park).
