Summary
[edit]DescriptionRangers buttons, Angelica capitellata (25937877428).jpg |
rangers buttons, Angelica capitellata, California, White Mountains, Cottonwood Basin, Poison Creek, Fishlake Valley drainage, elevation 3030 m (9940 ft). The third (and maybe surprise) species of Angelica that grows in this little canyon of Poison Creek. Surprise because, until very recently, rangers buttons went by one of my "favorite" 11-syllable scientific names, Sphenosciadium capitellatum. (Now we're down to 9 syllables ;-) A 2004 genetic study showed that this species belongs with the rest of the species in the genus Angelica -- a fairly unsurprising result given the overall appearance of the plants. One of my favorite carrot family members, rangers buttons extends along the Sierra Nevada - Cascade axis from Oregon to northern Baja California, thence eastward to central Idaho and western Nevada, and also into northwestern California. Like most Angelica species, it likes its feet wet, and here in the White Mountains is limited to the most dependable watercourses, where it ascends to subalpine elevations. Also visible in this image are wild tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) and sweetsage (Artemisia ludoviciana incompta). |
