works of his own hands, but the ever-lasting hills, with their mizzey rock, defy his rage!Who can gaze on this piece of the ancient stony strong-hold of Jebus without perceiving the force and sublimityof the words of the inspired Pilgrim song, which setforth the immovable steadfastness of the believer— They that trust in Jehovah are as Mount Zion,Which shall not be moved, it abideth for ever!2 1 Ps. xlviii. 2, 4, 5, 12, 13, 14. 2 Ps. cxxv. 1. This is called a song of degrees, or of goingsup, and was probably sung on journeys to Sion. JERUSALEM 129 Equally striking, as viewed at the Holy City, arethe words of the next verse, which tell of the securityof the Lords people— Jerusalem ! mountains are round about her ;And Jehovah is round about His people,Henceforth, even for evermore. Deep, narrow valleys surround most of the city.On the south, as I have said, is the gay, or gorge-likeglen, of Hinnom, on the north and east the nahhaLor water-course valley, of Kiclron, and beyond these

THE KUBBET ES SAKHRA (THE DOME OF THE ROCK5), IN THEHAREM ESH SHEREEF ( THE NOBLE SANCTUARY ), THE TEMPLEAREA, JERUSALEM 9 RAMBLES IN BIBLE LANDS rise a series of connected mountains like a system ofhuo^e natural out-works. On the north and north-eaststands Mount Scopus, on the east the Mount of Olives,on the south-east the Mount of Offence (so called fromthe temple of Solomons heathen wives having beenbuilt there), and on the south and south-west the Hillof Evil Counsel, where, according to tradition, the Jewstook counsel to put our Lord to death. These featuresmay be well observed by a visit to the Science and ArtDepartment of the South Kensington Museum, wherea model is now to be seen of the rock levels, showingthe ground of the city as it stood formerly, before itwas covered with debris as it is now, in one spot tothe astounding depth of 125 feet. And here I can well imagine the sceptic exclaiming,Do you call these slight elevations mountains? Why, they are only very small hills! T
