Raja Dhiraj Pal of Basohli State, ca.1720–25

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Raja Dhiraj Pal of Basohli State, Basohli, ca.1720–25. Kept in the collection of the Punjab Museum, Patiala.

Source description:

Kirpal Pal had two sons, with the elder being Dhiraj Pal, born in 1670 A.D. Upon Kirpal Pal's death in 1695 A.D., Dhiraj Pal ascended to the throne of Basohli. Like his father, he was a scholar, known for collecting eighteen Puranas and promoting their public recitation, further supporting the development of painting that flourished during his father's reign. Dhiraj Pal was renowned for his striking appearance, and it's recounted that the daughter of Adina Beg, Viceroy of the Punjab, fell for him due to his personal charm. When the Nawab mentioned this to the Raja, Dhiraj Pal's response was swift and intimidating, causing unease among those present. This portrait depicts him holding a rosary and smoking a huqqa, likely painted in his later years when much of his physical allure had waned.
