Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Communications trench, Western Front, during World War I. A well-constructed communications trench. It has been dug to a depth of around two metres and the sides lined with horizontal poles, which are held in position with vertical poles braced across the trench. It appears to run under the railway trucks, possibly as a form of camouflage.

Communications trenches ran between the front-line trenches and the reserve trenches. They allowed for the safer movement of troops, ammunition, supplies and injured.
[Original reads: 'Railway trucks under which a communication trench is dug.']
