Railway bridge, Talybont-on-Usk

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Railway bridge, Talybont-on-Usk Just below bridge 143 this former railway bridge crosses the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal. The railway was originally opened in 1863, passenger services being withdrawn at the end of 1962 - interestingly, also the year that the canal was formally abandoned (although of course it has since been restored). Prior to closure, the line carried a regular service between Newport and Brecon; curiously, however, railway and canal followed an entirely different route between the two towns - this being the only point at which they crossed. Trains ran via Bargoed, Dowlais and Talyllyn Junction whereas the canal passes through Cwmbran, Pontypool and close to Abergavenny. In 1962 trains took more than two and a half hours to cover the 47 miles with 21 intermediate stops; it is perhaps unsurprising that they were not very popular.
