Summary
[edit]DescriptionRailway brake van, Lisburn station - geograph.org.uk - 1150841.jpg |
English: Railway brake van, Lisburn station A brake van was needed on trains (mainly freight and departmental) where the wagons were not fitted ie fitted with through brake pipes allowing the driver to apply continuous braking throughout the whole train.
The guard travelled in the van (at the rear of the train), had to be passed for the route travelled and know when to apply the hand brake for curves, gradients and signals etc. By this time NIR did not operate freight within NI so the van was confined to a few ballast trains where unfitted flat wagons (usually old coach underframes) were in use. For the record this one is C452 (the C prefix denoting a vehicle for internal use only usually for permanent way maintenance). |
