My mother also taughtme how to read good books quickly andcorrectly, and as this opened up a greatworld in literature, I have always beenvery thankful for this early training. I was fond of experimenting, so, whenI was 12 years old I got work as a trainnewsboy in order to earn my own pocketmoney to buy chemicals and apparatuswith which to experiment. My train ranfrom Port Huron to Detroit, and this to be very happy in having these fine op-portunities of preparing to do big thingsin the world. Charges for Lost Checks Illegal. Railroad companies have lately re-ceived notice from the Interstate Com-merce Commission that the practice ofcharging SO cents for a lost baggagecheck and 25 cents demurrage per nightfor left baggage is not legal and neednot be paid. A traveler on one of the trunk lineslost his pocketbook which contained thecheck for his trunk. The railroad com-pany would not deliver the trunk tillthe owner paid 50 cents for the lost
