One of the Bowdoin portraits, dated 1647, has a ruff. Martin Tromp (i597-1653) Is a man of mature yearswhen he appears with a ruff. JAMES BLAIR1656-1743 (915) BoLLiNG Portraits The portraits of members of the Boiling family ofVirginia are in some respects as interesting and com-plete as any in America. They are reproduced in Me-moirs of the Boiling Family (1868)/ The costumeof Robert, the immigrant (i 646-1709), seems correct. That of his son, John (i676-1729), appears to be ofthe period of 1710 (simple, flat cravat), and yet hisface looks rather youthful for a man of thirty-four.His so-called wife, a lady with a veil or shawl over herhead, and three bows in place of clasps on her bodice, might very well be his stepmother, Anne, daughter ofDrury Stith, Robert Boilings second wife. Robert mar-ried her in 1681, and she was living in 1700. Hercostume is not unlike that of Mrs. Thomas Edgar, ofDownham Hall, Suffolk, done in 1694,- when she wasadvanced in age. daughter of Thomas Rolfe b.c. 1650 d. 1676. Jane = Robert Bollinger Anne, daughter 1646-1709. of Drury Stith. Came 1660.m. 1675. John Boiling = Mary Kennononly chi
