English: The mosque was begun in 1192 AD, after the capture of Delhi by Qutbuddin Aibak, and completed in 1198 AD.This is the earliest extant mosque in India and erected with the carved columns and other architectural members of 27 Hindu and Jain temples demolished by Qujbuddin Aibak, as recorded by him in his own inscription on the main eastern entrance. Qutbuddin calls this mosque as Jami Masjid. Later it came to be called as Quwwatul-Islam (‘might of Islam’) mosque. |
