English: Front panel below statue of Queen Anne, Queen Anne's Walk, Barnstaple, Devon. Given in 1708 by Robert Rolle (d.1710) of Stevenstone. Lower panel shows the Royal Arms of Queen Anne; above which is an escutcheon with the arms of Rolle above which the crest of Rolle (A cubit arm erect vested or charged with a fess indented double cotised azure in the hand a roll of parchment). Behind is an antique trophy of arms, on either side of which are symbolic representations, in the antique Greek and Roman dishevelled style, of captured French soldiers from the Battle of Blenheim (1704). Such groupings of two adorsed captured soldiers survive on many ancient Greek and Roman coins. A similar grouping is visible on the roofline of Blenheim Palace. Above all is a tablet with dedicatory text: Anna, Intemeratae fidei testimonium Roberti Rolle de Stephenstone in agro Devoniensi Armigeri MDCCVIII ("Anne, a testament of the undefiled faith of Robert Rolle, Esquire, of Stevenstone in the land of Devonshire, 1708"). |
