extends from the neck of the bladder to theextremity of the penis. Its total length is about eight inches and a half,but varies much according to the length of the penis, and the conditionof that organ. - Except during the passage of urine or semen the canal isa mere cleft elongated transversely and with the superior and inferiorparts of the wall in contact (see fig. 584, v). Its diameter when moderatelydistended varies at different parts of its extent, as will be stated moreparticularly hereafter. The tube consists of a continuous mucousmembrane, supported by an outer layer of submucous tissue connectingit with the several parts through which it passes. In the submucoustissue there are, throughout the whole extent of the urethra, two layers STEUCTUEE OF COEPUS SPOXGIOSUil. 677 of plain muscular fibres, the inner fibres disposed longitudinally, and theouter in a circular direction. The urethra is described under the threedivisions of the prostatic, menibranous, and sijongij portions.
