Français : Église Notre-Dame, Granby, Montérégie, Québec, Canada.
English: Church of Notre-Dame, Granby, Montérégie, Quebec, Canada. In 1840, a first catholic chapel was erected on the site of the present church. With the arrival of many Catholic French Canadians during the next two decades, Mgr Jean-Charles Prince bishop of Saint-Hyacinthe founded in 1859 the parish of Notre-Dame-du-Sacré-Cœur of Granby. The industrial development during the 1890s pushed the local population to 3000 followers, outgrowing the 1874 brick chapel. The construction of a new church and a presbytery was decided, but the project got started only in 1898 due to the lack of funds. The works were lead by architect Casimir Saint-Jean of Montreal. In January 1900 a first mass was celebrated in the basement. The works resumed in 1904 with the completion of the bell tower and the start of the interior layout. The church was finally blessed in May 1906, having costed $120,000. In 1934, on the nineteenth centennial of the Redemption, the priest Étienne Eugène Pelletier decided to renovate the interior. New frescoes and stained-glass windows were ordered from Guido Nincheri, the famous church decorator at the time, who left to us over 2000 works in churches across Canada and New England, including thirty stained-glass windows in Notre-Dame of Granby. |
