[edit]DescriptionPyotr Valuev Depicted during the Performance against the Russification of Ukraine 2.jpg |
English: Pyotr Valuev is depicted as one of the Russian high-ranking officials who persecuted the Ukrainian language during a performance against the Russification of Ukraine. Behind him, a girl with a "stitched mouth" is holding an imitation of the Valuev Circular.
The demonstration took place on Bankova Street, near the Administration of the President of Ukraine, on the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language in 2015. Its participants demanded to take legislative measures to protect the Ukrainian language in Ukraine. The organizer was the Civic Movement Vidsich. During the performance, characters such as Russian tsars (Peter I, Anna Ioannovna, Catherine II), the Russian imperial minister Pyotr Valuev, and the dictator of the USSR Joseph Stalin, who became famous for the Russification of Ukraine and the suppression of the Ukrainian language, praised and thanked the then Ukrainian government for continuing their policy regarding the Ukrainian language. Behind each of the characters, an activist with a "stitched mouth" held an imitation of one of the historical documents certifying the Ukrainophobic policy implemented by these officials. Several activists held posters with infographics about the oppressed position of the Ukrainian language in the media sphere of Ukraine or with calls for legislative protection of the Ukrainian language. A "Soviet schoolgirl" was moderating the event as the symbol of the Russification of Ukraine in the USSR. |
