| Description |
Español: Levantado sobre otro anterior datado en 1460, y destruido por una fuerte crecida del río en 1545, el puente actual fue concluido en 1596, siendo el rey de España Felipe II, y Gobernador de Badajoz D. Diego Hurtado de Mendoza. Hasta el construido en el siglo XV, la ciudad careció de puente, realizándose la travesía del río mediante barcas, o aprovechando los vados en tiempo practicable. El erigido a finales del XVI, es básicamente, el mismo llegado hasta nuestros días, tratándose de una obra de carácter herreriano, sólidamente fabricado en piedra. Distintos desperfectos ocasionados por el río en diferentes épocas han obligado, no obstante, a sucesivas reparaciones para mantenerlo practicable. Así en 1603, reinando ya Felipe III, una gran crecida del Guadiana destruyó 16 de sus 24 ojos, motivando su práctica reconstrucción. |
