y to the figures that would be obtained if computedfrom the analyses of the machine and beater wastes according to theratio of the volumes of these wastes to each other. On the basis of the figures given in the table for the average totalvolume of waste per ton of strawboard manufactured, and on therated capacity of the strawboard mills in this country in 1918 (Lock-woods Directory of the Paper and Stationery Trades, 1918) therewill be approximately 20,000.000,000 gallons of waste dischargedfrom the various plants during the year. The station was located in the rear of the American Strawboardplant and adjacent to the flume carrying all the waste from the mill. PUMPING EQUIPMENT. A 2-inch horizontal centrifugal pump direct-connected to a 5;-horsepower marine gas engine was used for raising the waste fromthe flume to the settling tanks. The pump was set so that the wasteflowed through the pipe connecting it with the waste flume to thedischarge outlet and the discharge lift was 15 feet. This arrange-ment increased the discharge lift somewhat but had the advantageof having the pump always primed. The waste was discharged fromthe pump to th
