Owing to the fact that the number of towns reportingrepresents a comparatively small portion of our population,and the further fact that the methods employed by some ofthem are not as complete as they should be, our vital sta-tistics are not as satisfactory as we would like. At the sametime thev are valuable. Bv a studv of Tables I and II an.excellent idea can be obtained of the distribution of thevarious diseases throughout the State, and of Table III theirrelative prevalence at different seasons. An examination of the tables from the towns, which arewell scattered, will show the causes of death in the differentlocalities and the annual death-rate. This latter cannot inthe case of every town, as intimated above, be regarded, asentirely accurate; but inasmuch as the conditions applyequally fo both races they can be depended upon to indicatethe relative death-rate among our white and colored people.The death-rate among the latter is very m
