"PUBLIC SCHOOL" KOUTS IND. Date: Circa 1910 Source Type: Postcard Publisher, Printer, Photographer: Karbo, M. L. Photo Company (#15) Postmark: January 19, 1910, Kouts, Indiana Collection: Steven R. Shook Remark: The community of Kouts' first school was a wood framed structure that was later sold and used as a saloon. The second school, also a wood framed structure, was razed by fire. The Kouts School seen here was erected in 1896 under the authority of Pleasant Township Trustee Peter Lyon. Originally built to house grades one through eight, the school included four large rooms, two rooms upstairs and two downstairs and was designed by architects Krutch and Laycock. George T. Pallison was the builder of this four room brick structure. The school was enlarged in 1906 by Pleasant Township Trustee Clarence Dillingham at a cost of $21,000. The building was enlarged again in 1914 by the addition of a domestic science room. In 1936, a new consolidated school building was being constructed at a cost of $167,000 that embraced grades one through twelve. The school building still exists [2022] and is used as an apartment building. Sources: The Vidette-Messenger, Valparaiso, Porter County, Indiana; August 18, 1936; Volume 10, Section 2, Page 13.
