Title
Public-519C34 Bifid tip Nail Cleaner
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman nail cleaner cosmetic tool, dating to between the first to early fifth centuries AD. The remains of the nail cleaner consist of a broken suspension loop, followed by a tapering shaft which is sub-oval in cross-section, ending in a bifid tool-end. The suspension loop is circular with a circular hole pierced through its centre; the loop runs parallel to the bifid tip, making the suspension hole perpendicular to the tool edge. The upper quarter of the tool shaft is decorated with two consecutive incised cylindrical decorations which are then filled with incised hash-marks, creating a 'beaded' design. The rest of the tapering shaft is smooth and undecorated. The bifid end has been flattened for use and splits vertically up the shaft; the end has broken off. The nail cleaner has an even dark green patina.

Eckardt and Crummy (2007) mention that the bifid tip is a 'defining characteristic of Romano-British nail cleaners' and that they are common parts of toilet equipment sets as early as the 1st century AD onwards in Britain. Cf. Eckardt and Crummy, p. 48, no. 210
