ishment is naturally great, and this is greater ac-cording to the amount of trouble that it has entailed. We cannot really see the beauty in this head-dressand look upon it more in the light of a curiosity thanas a work of art. As a study in native manners andcustoms, it offers a certain amount of interest, and asa diversion from the hair-dressing of the Caucasian,it certainly gives us another idea of the trouble andlabor which will be devoted to a work whose final Page Sixty-Seven PROPER CARE OF THE HAIR AND SCALP object is to appear pleasing to the other sex.. But thisis rather a question for the anthropologist to handle. It has been given to show the diversity in hair-dressingamong different nations and peoples and also of theeffects produced by these various hair-dressings fromthose practiced by the most enlightened, to the vogueamong savages and barbarians. The subject is onethat is really inexhaustible, but what has been givenis certainly sufficient for this book. Page Sixty-Eight

Fig. 38.Hair Dressing of a Dahomey an Woman. CHAPTER X. HAIR RESTORERS. Hair restorers are solutions which are reputed toprevent falling out of the hair and to act as mediumsto promote the growth of hair. There are many onthe market and the manner in which they are com-pounded is calculated to make them pleasing to theeye and to the smell and more or less refreshing tothe scalp of the one using them. It would be outof good taste to mention these toilet preparations andit would perhaps be more profitable to give a formulafor one which acts as a general mild stimulant, adetergent and as a promoter of the growth of the hair. The formula is as follows: Resorcin (resublimed) 8 grains. Alcohol (80%) ethylic spirits one ounce. Compound tincture of cinchona.... three ounces. Bay rum two ounces. Carmine five grains. Mix and shake well. This lotion should be used every time that the scalpis massaged or the hair cut. It will be found to bepleasant, of a mildly stimulating character and coolingto
