29 April 2011. I hope everyone who watched it enjoyed the royal wedding! Mating St Mark's-Flies (Bibio marci) in Millennium Wood, Fairlands Valley Park, Stevenage. Their common name comes from the fact that the adults usually emerge around St Mark's Day, 25 April. There are hundreds (maybe thousands?!) of them almost everywhere I go at the moment! More than last year! Yesterday they were swarming all over me in Box Wood! It's easy to identify them in flight because their long legs dangle underneath them. Wasn't going to use this for Project 365 but then I thought of the appropriate caption! |
