Title |
Probable Roman to Early Medieval copper-alloy buckle plate fragment |
||
Description |
English: A probable fragment from a copper-alloy late Roman or Anglo-Saxon buckle plate. The broken nature of the artefact makes it difficult to identify with certainty. The fragment is sub-triangular in shape, with two floral knops at the widest part. From the knops the fragment tapers to a squared off terminal. Above the knops are two broken loops, side by side. It is likely that these loops were part of a hinged artefact, probably a buckle, and the buckle would have had corresponding hinged fittings. An alternative is that these loops are decorative openwork on an item such as a strap end, mount or buckle plate. Besides the floral knops, the artefact is decorated with a linear incised line running down the face and three punched dots, one in the centre of the line, the other two below and to either side of it. The reverse is undecorated and plain. A similar type hinged design can be seen on a late Roman buckle plate on this database, find reference SF7487. |
