to organise a hunt. I had the goodfortune to shoot a large bull elephant. He was stand-ing on the further bank of the raging Mboku, so thatthe only thing to do was to strap my gun to myshoulders, and swim across the river, taking mychance of crocodiles. I was rewarded by gettingwithin ten yards of the elephant, and killing him withtwo well-aimed bullets. On my return to camp Isent my bearers to fetch some of the meat, whichwas a welcome addition to their meagre fare. Theybrought back a large supply, with which they gorgedthemselves, and then decamped during the night.This was an unpleasant surprise for me the followingmorning, for even the escort of soldiers had run away.So I sat in the bush with my boys, two Frenchsharp-shooters, and Semios son, but not one bearer !I sent my soldiers to search the neighbouring villages,but they returned empty-handed.
