| Description |
Deutsch: Im Brennpunkt der Geschichte stand das «Prison» am 2. März 1798. Morgens um 11 Uhr hatte General Bernhard Altermatt den Stadtschlüssel den einmarschierenden Franzosen übergeben. Viele Solothurner schäumten vor Wut über die Kapitulation, und ein fanatisierter Haufen machte sich in die Vorstadt auf. Erstmals wollte im «Prison» niemand aus-, sondern jemand einbrechen. Waren doch drinnen die sogenannten «Patrioten» eingekerkert, Oppositionelle, die mit der Französischen Revolution sympathisierten. Der Mob hatte vor, an ihnen eine Lynch-Justiz zu vollziehen und sie umzubringen. Französische Kavallerie sprengte dazwischen und rettete die Patrioten vor dem Volkszorn. Die Szene ist in einem eindrücklichen Stich von Laurent Louis Midart festgehalten. |
