Summary
[edit]DescriptionPrincipia Concave Disc Reduces Resistance.jpg |
English: Two of the solids covered in the Scholium to Section 7 of Book 2 of the Principia: the frustum of a cone and the solid of minimum resistance are both terminated at the front by a flat disc. Newton suggested that replacing the curved bow of a ship with the frustum of a cone would reduce its resistance through the water. Although this is not covered in the Principia, by making the front surface of both these solids concave, the overall resistance is reduced further without altering the length of the solid. If he had considered that by making the front of the frustum concave, to further reduce the resistance of a ship, he might have realised that this model of resistance would not apply to ships, since a ship with a concave bow from its appearance alone would be more resistant than one with a flat bow.
