Development Engine Only The Great Number of Different Engine Models Under Development and an Engine Planned to be Produced by the Competition Forced Pratt & Whitney to Terminate Further Development of the R-2180 “Twin Hornet-” The R-2180 “Twin Hornet’ was well along in the development stages when two issues surfaced that caused termination of the engine program. The first was realization that Pratt & Whltney's engineering had too many projects under development to provide each with the required attention necessary and Pratt & Whitney‘s company president, Frederick B. Rentschler could not be confident of meeting his first precept of offering the most dependable engine in it’s class. Second, Wright Aeronautical had a r-2600 engine on the drawing board that promised to out perform the R-2180 “Twin Hornet” that was under development Pratt & Whitney remained committed to always provide the highest powered and most reliable engines in their class. A new engine with 18 equivalent displacement cylinders became the company’s focus and resulted in the legendary R-2800 ‘Double Wasps." This Experimental Engine, designated X-30. is the only R-2180 “Twin Hornet believed to currently exist. |
