breeders. They be-get a feeling that anybody can get such prices andcan make such profits; they arouse expectations whichcannot be realized; and they injure, rather than help, the industry. Still, and this shows the essential selfishness ofhuman nature, few men would object to receive theaforesaid extravagant prices or refuse to make suchenormous profits, if the chance came to them. Theywould fail, under the pressure of self interest, to re-member the interests of the industry. But, at any rate, we can at least apprehend thefact that such attractive prices and such dazzling suc-cesses are not the rule, but the exception; that theymay be something to be thankful for, if they come, but are not to be expected; and that we must be contentwith a reasonable, instead of an extraordinary profit. We make too much of the fact that new laid eggsin winter command fifty cents a dozen. They commandthis price because there are so few of them, and for-tunate, indeed, is the man who gets enough of them

The costof producing winter eggs is often more than theirvalue. In a market report, a dealer said: Egg priceshave not advanced, because there are no eggs uponwhich to advance prices. That tells the story ofwinter egg-production. Still we should strive to produce what eggs wecan in winter because they help to cut down the costof keeping for the year. Even if spring and summereggs are produced more economically than wintereggs, the business must be figured upon an an-nual basis. The true method of reckoning profits isto get all the credits possible through the whole year, and deduct the whole yearly expense from the credits, and winter eggs, even if they are not so plentiful asdesired, help to swell the annual credits. I do not wish to be misunderstood. Some breed-ers do produce winter eggs in such quantities as tomake their production profitab
