POULTRY FANCIER 695 IS IT THE STRAIN OR THE BREED I persume the most frequently ask-ed question of an Editor of a PoultryPaper is which is the best breed. Now an Editor or any one else canttell you, I think that all poultrymenif they are honest with themselvesand with others will agree with methat there is no best breed. Nowdont misunderstand me, for we allknow that some hens are better layersand breeders than others, but it isnot confined to any one breed. Youmay ask why is it then that somelay better than others. It is the strainand the way they have been bred. I maintain that you can develop alaying strain and an exhibition strainbetter on two lines than by combiningthe two. Take for example the breeding ofrace horses, they dont breed themfrom a heavy work horse, or breed aheavy work horse from a 2.10 pacer.Think it over. Personally I prefer the Buff Wyan-dottes, because, living here in Mainewhere the thermometer goes down inwinter to 10 and 12 below zero andthen to 15 and 20 you w
