The monster guns that found their wayto the battle line in France, transferred from decks tomobile railway mounts, as much to the surprise ofour allies as of the enemy, first set the hills aboutIndian Head reverberating with their trial detonationsas the shells screamed down the river range as far asPotomac Creek. Another similar military operatingbase which grew out of the last war was the newerproving ground on the Virginia shore south of MathiasPoint named for Admiral Dahlgren. Its range is evenmore remarkable than that at Indian Head where thewhole course of the shell is over the Potomac in full 344 POTOMAC LANDINGS view from the gun. The main Dahlgren Range takesan easterly course across the peninsula between thePotomac and the Chesapeake, and shells fired fromthis base fall in the bay at points unseen from the gun,directed by spotters on the Bay who also signal whenthe waters are safely cleared for action.
