Summary
[edit]DescriptionPostbox near Chilmark Quarries, Chilmark - geograph.org.uk - 906139.jpg |
English: Postbox near Chilmark Quarries, Chilmark This Georgian postbox, either George V or VI, is on the west side of the unclassified road that runs north from Ham Cross to the village of Chilmark, near to the entrance to Chilmark Quarries.
This type of postbox is known as a lamp box because when these detachable letterboxes were first introduced in 1896 in London squares, they were fixed onto lamp posts. Later these lamp boxes were used in rural areas and today they can be seen attached to telegraph poles, stone posts etc. |
