Title
Post medieval silver pendant
Description
English: Description: A silver shield-shaped pendant with a large circular suspension loop. The front of the loop is decorated with a central groove. The pendant itself has the inscription T//TYR//REL engraved on its front, in three rows of large seriffed capitals. The L has a double vertical stem. The reverse has a groove around the edge of the shield shape, and perhaps a lightly engraved design which now cannot be made out.

Dimensions: 18.45mm in length, 9.07mm in width and 0.91g in weight.

Discussion: Objects such as this were used on the harness of hawks and falcons to identify the owner, which in this case was one of the Tyrrel family. Tyrell or Tyrrel seems to be a surname associated with the area in which the pendant was found. Kelly' s Directory for Essex 1882 states that Tolleshunt Magna, or Major, has a church of St Nicholas which formerly contained a chapel on the north of the chancel containing a stately monument to Stephen Beckingham (1550 - 1611) of Tolleshunt D'Arcy and Avis his wife, daughter of Sir Henry Tyrell of Thorne.

It is similar to others found elsewhere, such as an example from Boxted area, Suffolk 2004 T251 (Treasure Annual Report 2004, 142, no 320), although this parallel is associated with the Waldegrave family.
