Post medieval pipe tamper |

Description |
English: An incomplete copper alloy post medieval pipe tamper, dating to c. 1700-1800.
Only the terminal of the tamper survives, in an anthropomorphic form. It takes the shape of a female figure with exaggerated bosom and hips. She appears nude, or possibly wearing a classical style garment which clings to the figure, the subtleties of which are now worn away. The arms are outstretched at the elbow, with an object in each hand. The left hand holds a long staff with a knopped top which extends downwards to the figure's feet. The right hand holds what appears to be a palm branch with six side knops representing palm fronds, and a seventh central knop as the terminal. The branch extends upwards, to the level of the figure's head. The legs are depicted as joined almost together, with one knee bent forwards. The buttocks and spine are clearly demarcated on the reverse. The feet are placed upon a rounded platform, which then tapers to the break. A wide range of classical deities are depicted on pipe tampers, and this may be an intended representation of Victory with a palm branch and the staff of Mercury, in her guise as the victorious messenger bringing good news. WREX-F9F21C; HESH-9EC5ED and LANCUM-264376 are examples of classical pipe tampers on the database, while White (2018) also includes a discussion on the use of classical figures in the design of early modern objects. The exaggerated female form also suggests a connection to more bawdy pipe tampers of the same period. Measurements: 42.1mm length, 25.7mm width, 4.8mm thickness, weight 12.95g. |
