Title
Post medieval pin
Description
English: A silver-gilt dress-pin consisting of a spherical head and near-complete shaft, most probably of post-Medieval date. The point of the shaft appears to have broken off. The head is decorated with a double band of filigree running around the circumference, measuring 1.5mm in width. Both hemispheres of the head are decorated with three single bands of filigree encircling filigree trefoils (also made of single bands) with a central knop. The three spaces between the encircled trefoils are filled with a knop tightly encircled by a single filigree band. The crown of the head is finished with a larger knop. Gilding is evident on the head, and on the upper part of the shaft.

The shaft has a circular cross-section, and is bent approximately 2/3 down from the head towards the point. There is some damage to the shaft caused by the stress of this bend.

The pin was found during excavations carried out by Birmingham Archaeology, and its context (a cleaning layer of demolition rubble) was tentatively spot-dated to the late 16th century. Subsequent cleaning and conservation work revealed the pin to be silver-gilt, and it therefore qualifies as treasure under The Treasure Act 1996.

Other finds from this context consisted of a small quantity of tile and pottery, 1 piece of clay pipe, some bottle glass, and animal bone. Although assisting in the dating of this context, it is unlikely that these finds will be considered treasure.
