Title
Post Medieval knee buckle (front and back views)
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy and tinned (possibly) sub-annular shoe or knee buckle with a drilled frame for a separate spindle, dating to the Post Medieval period, between AD 1650 – 1750 (length: 37.5mm; width: 22.5mm; thickness: 7mm; weight: 9.8g).

The buckle is sub-annular in plan and mostly D-shaped in section with the possible remains of tinning covering parts of the surface on the front and back of the artefact. On the front of the buckle, there is a moulded pin rest in the central of each end of the frame. There are also raised moulded scrolls to either side of the spindle holes. The iron spindle (there is a large amount of iron corrosion in this area), although incomplete, is still present, with the remains of a possible iron pin protruding outwards to one side. The back of the buckle is undecorated. Overall, the artefact is in a worn and poor condition.

Similar examples are illustrated in Whitehead, R, 1996, ‘Buckles 1250 – 1800’, pages 98 – 99.
