Title
Post Medieval - Pipe Tamper
Description
English: This is a typical (very) bawdy pipe tamper, probably dating from the later half of the 18th century. Whilst tampers have been around since the later 16th century, this bawdy style became very popular during the later 18th century. Given the nature of the beast, it may have been a lady’s smoking accessory, as pipe smoking was common for women as well as men during that time, smoking the oft called ‘Indian Weed’. The hat would also suggest that later date, given the introduction of this style to the UK in around 1790.
